Channel:bitfolk
From Blitzed
#BitFolk is the unofficial channel of BitFolk Ltd., a VPS hosting company set up by grifferz. Its users include former members of strugglers.net, new customers, and the occasional kook or Turk attracted by the relatively high user-count.

[edit] History and Culture
<GeorgeWBush> I don't have anywhere else on Blitzed to go
#BitFolk is a direct successor to the earlier, now defunct, channel #strugglers, which some saw as an alternative to unofficial network channel #blitzed. The decision was taken to move to #BitFolk shortly before BitFolk Ltd. launched.
The channel requires its users to be occasionally thick-skinned, broad-minded and reasonably sensitive to what may or may not be non-work-safe. NWS links are normally followed by 'NSFW' or 'NWS', but a general rule of thumb is: "Don't launch links from #BitFolk at work unless you are absolutely certain you want a career change."
Questions about hosting, VPS setups, problems etc can also be raised and discussed in-channel in its capacity as an unofficial support method.
- /Birthdays - Birthdays of some channel regulars.
[edit] Official Rules
The following rules were declared at various points in order to make the channel more conducive to sensible discussion, and presumably remain in force:
- No discussion of Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood
- Be Good / Obey :)
Slightly more seriously:
- Please try to limit conversations of Blitzed internal matters to places where it would be more appropriate, such as #blitzed, /chatops, etc.. We're not trying to stifle conversation, nor trying to set any hard and fast rules here nor stop people from blowing off steam. We just ask that you attempt to self-regulate as the people who should be taking part in these conversations are in another place.
- The channel is quite technical in nature, being an unofficial support channel for a small ISP and having most of its members working in IT. Therefore repeatedly complaining that the tone of conversation is too technical, or saying things like "omg speek english i cant tell wat ur talking about lol" is likely to result in a refund of your entry fee (a ban).
[edit] Access list
Please note that your position on the access list bears no strong relationship to your status as a customer and (as everything else in the channel) is at the whim of dictator for life evil griffer

[edit] Morocco Amnesty Day
January 1st 2010 will be the start of #BitFolk Morocco Amnesty Day, a 24 hour period where the long-standing akick on *@*.ma will be lifted in order to give the nation of Morocco a second chance.
Sometime on January 1st a chanop will remove this akick, and about 24 hours later we will review the IRC behaviour of the nation of Morocco to see if it is worthy of our company in the coming year.
Behaviour that will disgrace Morocco (and lead to its entire IRCing population being held in contempt for another year) includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Going on and on in a language other than English even though they have already been told that no one present speaks Moroccan, Arabic, Dutch or whatever.
- Allowing mad scripts to annoy us after being told once to turn them off.
- Popping in to spam for their favourite Moroccan channel / server / whatever.
A list of /Moroccan bans is available for easier reapplication when the time comes.
Update 2008-01-06: So far the nation of Morocco has been remarkably well-behaved and we have had no cause to replace the ban. Congratulations Morocco!
Update 2008-05-08: The constant flooding etc. becomes too much. Bye bye to Morocco until 2009!
Update 2009-01-01: Morocco is allowed to join us for 2009
Update 2009-04-18: Morocco sent packing again until 2010
Update 2010-01-01: Morocco is allowed to join us for 2010

[edit] Server naming
The channel is sometimes used to name servers and other computers.

[edit] Memes
Many memes have been inherited from users' previous channels.
- SLM/hy/hai - all greetings, sometimes in giant, multicoloured text. SLM is a contraction of 'salam', as used by IRCing Turks
- Now look, - not as a sentence fragment, but as a complete phrase (including comma). Used to indicate disagreement (in the style of GeorgeWBush) with a rational point of view
- polite/polite heu/heu - ironic laugh at something not deemed particularly funny, but where some effort at humour, or 'heumour' has been made.
- GLAD I DON'T X Y Z! - usually said after grossly exaggerating the vileness of a particular topic in great detail, after a noted quote from another channel
- Discussing how much the channel has become exactly like #blitzed
- Turk - used to describe anyone with a tendency to use annoying popups, mad script, h4x0r talk, insulting of ones mother, use of gimpy emoticons and so on. Turks need not come from Turkey, they only need to exhibit Turkish IRC kiddie behaviour
- "vi" - used as the answer to any request for any sort of software, the more inappropriate the better, in homage to a past quote, e.g.:
- <tom> if someone makes me a gradient file i can do it
- <tom> or suggest good free image creation software for OS X
- <grifferz> vi
