Admins

Server Admins are here to run their server(s) and take an active role in determining network policy. Pretty much that simple.

In essence, a server admin is still an oper, and do have the same general responsibilities as opers.

Aside from their role as an oper, they have a few other duties:

  • Giving their part to the network as a whole, for example, voting on network issues. Server Admins are the only ones who can directly change network policy and being a server admin is the easiest way to shape the network.
  • Maintaining their IRCD, keeping it up to date, and properly configured.
    • Up-to-date routing plan, which details C:/N:/H:lines for each and every server.
  • Keeping the BOPM on their server running, as well as up to date with current patches/upgrades.
  • Managing their server's staff: training, discipline for breaking network rules (hopefully this isn't necessary), and keeping them up to date on all current server and network happenings.
  • Maintaining their server hardware, or keeping in contact with the people who do. This includes keeping the operating system patched, up to date and secure.

A guide describing the initial setup of these things is available.

Many of the above tasks can be delegated to the server's operators or other staff, but it is ultimately the server admin's responsibility to make sure they are taken care of.

In all, a Server Admin is first responsible for their server, then to the duties of a normal oper. Server Admins are key in the running of an IRC network, without them what would you connect to?
