Accidental kill

If you made an honest mistake and disconnected a user, it is best to be honest and genuinely apologetic. First ensure that the user is able to return to the network. This means lifting any k:line or akill you may have placed on them.

If the user returns quickly, talk to them in private and offer your apologies, explain that it was an honest mistake. If you are questioned in channels, admit there too that it was a mistake. If the user is still upset by what has happened, offer them contact details for your admin. If you are an admin, offer them contact details for the admin list and EB. Provided that your fellow admins/EB are satisfied that it was a genuine mistake and you have done your best to apologise, then there will be no unfortunate repercussions for you.

If the user doesn't return, try your best to contact them by email. All registered nicknames have an email address that you may be able to view by typing /ns info nickname. If the address is hidden, talk to a services admin about what has happened, they may be able to give you the email address (in confidence!) or else contact the user for you. Remember also that nickname@users.blitzed.org usually works for email address, too.

Accidents happen and it is inevitable that very occasionally a user will be disconnected by accident. Opers found taking advantage of this to harrass users will not keep their O:lines for long. Note that sometimes due to large-scale abuse, very wide-ranging akills or k:lines may occasionally need to be placed which will affect many innocent users. This is unfortunate but does not fall under the category of an accident. Such situations will always be co-ordinated by the Admin team.
